ronhatch
Hi all, I have just read in the Practical Classics mag that a guy restoring a TR3A sourced some stainless bumpers from a Vietmanese company does anybody know anything about these ? Also I'm having trouble sourcing the coutersunk screws that fasten the door check straps to the door and door frame, ordered from rimmers and TRbitz and they are different thread going into the original plates, anyone know why ? Regards Ron
graeme
Ron, They are Harrington Group bumpers, excellent quality. http://www.groupharrington.com/en/page/42/about-bumpers.html No connection, just a satisfied customer. Cheers Graeme Edited October 14, 2014 by graeme
Fireman049
Hi Graeme ~ I was going to buy a full set of S/S bumpers for my 'E'-type Jaguar from Harrington's but was rather afraid due to the fact that they were from Vietnam. What are your thoughts? Tom.
AlanT
You probably want 1/4in UNF c/sink cross-point screws. I have these. Edited October 14, 2014 by AlanT
Nigel Triumph
I have Harrington stainless bumpers on my 6. I'm very pleased with them, fitted well and excellent finish. Wouldn't recommend for concours though, as the polished stainless has a very slightly different colour hue to genuine chrome. But they're great for a smart looking road car that gets used even in the rain! Nigel
ctc77965o
A friend here visited the manufacturers in Vietnam. It's incredible what they make. They are NOT pressed in customised formers, the have many workers beating the shapes from bare sheet entirely by hand. They have an original example of each bumper and they are copying it. The craftsmanship is excellent, the noise is painful, the results seem very good and the fit I have seen on Mercedes examples is good.
stuart
The Harrington bumpers are actually very good, they are a different colour true as stainless isnt as "yellow" as chrome but if you want to use the car then for the price they are well worth fitting, the only difference being where there are captives they are metric. Stuart.
AlanT
Now you see the basis of the repro-part business. Hand beating out a bumper is one thing. It may be slow but you will get a useful result. Try hand-filing a gear or cutting it on some makeshift machine and you get somting that will work in a window-winder but not in a gearbox. Try making rubber by mixing stuff in bowls and cooking over a fire and you will get somthing that falls to bits in the rain. This is why recovering original parts is often a better bet. billg
My Harrington bumpers for my TR3A came by Airmail within 10 days! I am very pleased with them as they are fit and forget. I use my car in the winter and the salt here would quickly go for the generally poor standards of rechroming now available inScotland Bill G @NB. IWE COTS:-)
Tomtr250
Ron As Stuart says, these bumpers are good..............go for it Tom
cotswold
Hi Ron, Was looking at the SS option but wanted to maintain as much originality as possible and spotted an ad in Practical Classics for Birmingham Brassworks re-caroming. I took along my very rusty rear TR4A bumper (all but very small amouns of chrome left in centre area) and 4 weeks land £250 cash later picked up what looks like a brand new bumper. Very pleased with the result, check out their web site. They had many classic car bits like grilles and emblems hanging on racks. Much better colour than SS and a cheaper option. Good luck Charles

EdwinTiben
Hi stuart, thank you. Any idea of pricing?
Ian Vincent
Hi stuart, thank you. Any idea of pricing? Expensive. They quoted me £500 to re-chrome my windscreen frame, I got it done elsewhere for £200. I suspect that LC's quality would have been better but that is still a large difference. Rgds Ian
stuart
True they arent cheap but having had chroming done in lots of other places I know that I will still stay with them as their quality and finish is superb and they have sense enough to do things like mask threads etc whereas most others dont bother which causes problems for assembly. They are also one of the few that will do top notch repairs to parts or even straighten bumpers which is no easy task. Stuart.
Fireman049
Regarding the Harrington bumpers. I would like to get a set for my 'E'-type Jaguar. Are there any additional charges, VAT/Import Duty, to the total cost of the bumpers? Tom. Edited December 23, 2014 by Fireman049

Are there any additional charges, VAT/Import Duty, to the total cost of the bumpers? Tom. perhaps, here in the netherlands quite a lot of the packages are checked by customs, especially when large and listed "new" if so, we have to pay the duties and tax.. when no invoice is found they will do an estimate of the value ! bought a lhd metal dash for a mgb gt some years ago on ebay USA for 50$, the estimated the value to 250 euros and had to pay the VAT and import which alone was more than the price.. Guest
When I ordered mine, back in 09 it was, I think, they arrived 'FoC'. And only a few days after ordering them. DHL did the delivery, I think. Somehow I was under the impression that they stock some within the EU borders... Menno

Hi Tom, When I bought my 3a bumpers, I ordered them from the web site and they were delivered to the door about 3 weeks later. No duties etc. to pay - maybe I was lucky. Fit and finish were excellent. Rgds Ian
cotswold
I have seen the Harrington bumpers which look great but I would recommend re-chroming your old bumpers which would be cheaper (through my experience as above) keep the look of the car more original AND you get a better deeper chrome not SS finish. Charles PS I am in Vietnam for a few weeks in March, if I get time I might call on them.
AndyR100
I fitted Harrington s/s bumpers to my Stag, they were much better value than re-chroming and I liked the idea that they wouldn't rust away. I agree that the colour is not as clean as chrome - if you are after the completely original look they may not be for you. Mine were one of the very early batches, and I had to do some fettling with the rear mountings, I understand that the later ones are pretty-much spot on now ....... TR4A1965
Hi, I have just had my bumpers re-chromed and bashed back in to shape at CES in Folkstone. You can see them here: http://tr4a.weebly.com/triumph-tr4a-chrome-work.html They charged £245 per bumper to fix them up and re-chrome them. Mine had a few really irritating dents and I was minded to buy new ones but spoke to CES first and they said they could fix them up. Result is amazing. They seem to be great with bumpers but I had a side indicator and rear light outer that I was not happy with. Maybe I should take those to London chroming to see if they could get a better finish. CES, however did call me to let me know one of the parts was not coming up how they would like it. I use them for most things chrome and metal finish. Best.
