Interior trim colours (red on red) and suppliers

Recommended Posts

My car's build sheet shows red (vinyl?) trim (signal red car)

Current trim colour is black (I'm told its leather but it feels very hard to me!)

Anyway, its going as its v v tired.

I fancy going back to red, partly as its original, but also as just about every other signal red has black seats

However red body, red hardtop, red trim - all a bit red ?

But then, with the hardtop on black interior is very dark

Cream and tans are nice - but imho a tad MG'ish ? - ladies, what do you think ?

I think the black seats with red piping look too modern

All the pics I see on t'internet of red seats seem show black carpet, is this correct, or are they hiding the dirt?

Red seats, carpet, hood, car (red belts already fitted) - eek ? ?

If I stick with black seats, is red carpet a way of lightening the interior a tad or is red with black seats a no no ?

Pics from the history file of the original red seem to suggest it was a darkish red, but by then I also think the original red paintwork had lightened up a little.

John skinner has sent over a few red options, which include something closer to signal red ?

Has anyone done red under red with red and red ! ? and if so which red?

Has anyone ever seen a TR with red carpet under black seats - lots of moderns do it.

I assume no reason not to go with Mr Skinner - or are the cheaper TRshop and moss ones better than OK'ish.

Does it really matter if you have posh wool carpets, for the time spent in a TR are they really worth it - i don't drive barefoot.

( ps, for 'seats' read 'seats n trim' )

TR Shop trim is good and if you ask nicely can be obtained in different colours. Not much point in having wool carpets that are going to get wet.

I have the 'signal red' wool carpets from John Skinner but that colour was to match the red vinyl and leather interior already fitted many years ago (same colour as original). I had to have wool as the colour was not available in any other material at the time, either from Skinners or anyone else and I really wanted to replce the previous darker red carpets. If you have the choice avoid wool if you want to use the car and get it wet and muddy. The wool stains easily and is difficult to keep clean.

Hi Austin

Sounds as though it's going to be redder than a red thing, dash as well? Have you seen the photo of the TR Fire Engine? it's in the "Triumph By Name" book.

Steve

PS. You realise of course that once you've got red trim you'll want to paint the body white. :D

The prospect of taking all the dials out and the dash off and getting any dials to work when they go back on daunts me, but the dash is crapcondition and has to be done

Yeah, but Steve, yours is dirty burgundy with scruffy white

You got those brakes off yet ?

Hi Austin,

talk to Yvonne at PJM motors. talk over colours and ask for samples of carpet and trim. This is an old school company where the customer comes first, quality is super and they understand what is required. delighted with the complete service and willingness to get it right. The contact at every stage of replication of early trim from original was without question best I have ever had the pleasure to deal.

Any issues were sorted out without question promptly.

drop me a mail if you want further information.

Watch in utube A car is born MGB Mark Evans part where trim is done and visit PJM.

REAL OLD SCHOOL LUV IT!

IMO red is an impossible colour and black would be a better option. Only one thing worse than red is two reds clashing. Rich is doing a red leather Rolls-Royce 20/25 by Gurney Nutting ATM if you'd like a picture and have an air sick bag handy.

We use Boyriven motor Wilton in everything except some R-Rs & Bs where we can't get a colour and the extra pile doesn't get in the way, Then we use 100% Wool Belgian Wilton. These are the best and even Belgian Wilton is only £60 a metre, so it's worth it for how much nicer it looks. In my TR we've stuck to rubber mats in the front with underlay that can be thrown away if it gets soaked, but everywhere else is top quality wool and it looks lovely, it dries out fine and I haven't found it stains.

We used John Skinner seats, they look okay but didn't fit terribly well and are nothing like having them made properly by a craftsman, which is what I'm going to do with the Healey. It's not entirely Skinner's fault and many say he's the best, but seat sizes vary, spring bases vary and building stuff from patterns isn't the same as making patterns from seats. All the rest of the car was done with 1.7mm Brooklands hide from the Real Hide Company (Connolleys) on marine ply. It looks pretty good.

It's because of a bottle of dirty burgundy that i ended up with a scruffy white!

Brakes are fine, shiny new MOT too, but haven't had a chance to drive the thing.
