ronhatch
Hi all, I am trying to get the needle out of my carb, I have tried heat and it is currently in soak through the grub screw hole. Is it possible that the dashpot hole goes all the way through and I can get a long drift and tap it out ? Regards Ron
dingle
I don't think the hole goes through. I have had success in removing stuck needles by cutting a piece of insulation from a #14 wire, slipping it over the needle, and carefully placing in a vise. Take are not to overtighten the vise and also not to bend the needle. Rotating the piston should unstick the needle. Berry
Rodbr
For the price of a needle (probably worn by now) I would replace both needles and grease them when refitting. If you over tighten the vice or grip you could put a flat on it which will give most bizarre running and wear out the jet double quick. If it runs at all! You may get away with it but at least if not you will know which one to order. Been there done that and got the needles to prove it. They really are very delicate items of great precision and if you doubt what I am saying just Google su needles chart and look at the needles profile. FWIW Any scoring at all and it is B***ered. Not what you wanted to hear but I'm afraid it is a hazard of TR ownership. Rgds Rod Edited September 25, 2014 by Rodbr
ronhatch
I was going to replace the needles anyway as a matter of course but I am concerned about snapping it off, I will leave it soaking a few more days then try it in the vice. Thanks for the ideas Regards Ron
Rodbr
Hi Ron, If you are replacing anyway just tap the end of the needle into the body, penetrating oil in the hole, and then grip the needle in the vice. You are unlikely to snap the needle unless you bend it backwards and forewards. Grip it close to base of the needle and then turn the body back and forth whilst and it will come free. Furthermore if replacing the needles then I suggest the you replace the jets at the same time and you are then starting with a level playing field. stuart
You would be better off letting it soak for longer otherwise with that sort of brute force you will disturb the bush that the needle sits in and then the piston will be scrap. Stuart.
ronhatch
Job done, put it in the vice and got it out, I am going to use a service kit so jets etc. will be replaced. Cheers all for the replies Regards Ron
