Extra Illumination

Recommended Posts

I need to decide on the auxillary (two) driving lamps for my soon to be completed 3 and would appreciate any advice. Its a long time since the 60's when 2 Oscars were the nor'm

I am looking to fit something special and in keeping with the best performing and looking Tr3 ever, but not too big

What do you think?

Alan,

Hello and welcome.

As said request change of name soonest.

My own view is that a good pair of period Lucas 700 flame throwers, preferably originals even patinated ones look the Dogs on a TR2 and TR3.

Drop me a pm if you want to go this way. Do a Google TRIUMPH TR3 and look through period pictures and you will see what I mean. I feel the the smaller Lucas 576's look a bit lost on the front.

Hi Austin,

I suppose it is about how you view your car and if they are for look or use. As said and others seem to agree the 700's just look right and the 576's in my view look too small. Side screens are aggressive little buggers and big is beautiful as Edwin's car will testify.

THEY ARE A VERY EXPENSIVE ORNAMENT.

another advice: buy a pair of covers. something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LUCAS-Spot-Fog-Lamp-COVER-for-Lucas-SLR-SFT-700-7-178mm-Flamethrower-Light-/331189658751?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4d1c71247f

or a different color of course.. have seen them in red, white, black.

I had my first stone chips on the glass..

Oh.. dont forget the relay and an extra fuse !

I agree with Edwin on covers, but would add these caveats:

Some of them are very tight on size and not made especially well - I've had one pair split as I tried to fit them the first time! you could warm them up a little to make them a bit more malleable, but that likely won't help when you want to remove them on the road on a lovely autumn evening... Hunt around and examine photos closely if possible. I'll see if I can work out where I got my covers as they are a little better than some others.

Second, any serious stone will not be stopped by these covers (guess how I know?). They are certainly good at the small type of gravel used to re-surface roads, but IF you are ever on a road with 1" or 2-3cm stones, it is easy to have your lens broken. As Ian says, the best defense against this is a pair of stainless steel stone guards (the wire mesh type).

Other than that - 700's are definitely the way to go!!

True, Rod - I thought of that after I'd typed it!

These aren't the ones I have (can't find them on ebay today) but they look to be well made and of a thicker material than some. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SPOT-FOG-DRIVING-LAMP-LIGHT-COVERS-IDEAL-FOR-LUCAS-SLR-576-700-FT10-FT6-LR14-/171439563825?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27ea982431

I assume the stone guards for spot lamps are 707 and 708 on here, i.e., the ones that bolt under

http://www.vintagemotorspares.com/phdi/p1.nsf/supppages/hodge?opendocument&part=9

with stone guards not headlamps, stone guards on the spot lamps, I might as well put a cage over the windscreen too

On a 3a has anyone ever mounted lamps below rather than above the lamp bar so that they are closer to the floor and deflect less heat ?

These covers do not have a hole in them to remind you of the fact that the lamps are switched on.. if you have an illuminated switch, of course this isnt a problem (like i had on my tr2)
