phil3uh
Hi all, I have just come over to the dark side and bought a TR7 and notice the wheels are only 13", can you fit 14" or 15" minilites and if so what width and tire sizes are best? Cheers Phil
Hasbeen
It depends what you want to do with the car Phil, in my opinion. I have a 7 with 13 X 6 wheels, & an 8 with 15 X 7 wheels. Even with 15" the better quality performance tyres are no longer available. In fact even 16" are starting to be limited in performance tyre choice.. For rambling around twisty back roads the 13s, now shod with Kumho tyres is better than the 8, with it's 15" lower profile Pirellis. The steering is lighter, the ride more compliant, & the car less unsettled by mid corner bumps & lumps, so the handling is actually better. On a better road the 15s, with more grip comes into it's own, & is a better handling car. I suggest you decide what you will use the car for, & what quality tyres are available for what size wheels, before making your wheel choice.
AWM
If you want to uprate the brakes later 14" wheels will give you some flexibility as to what calipers you fit. Larger wheel and tyre combos. than standard do also look better on the car IMHO but I agree with Hasbeen that the 15" option means too low profile a tyre to give a good ride but others will disagree of course, since that is subjective and a trade off with ultimate handling etc. You can use one of the online tyre calculators to tell you the equivalent tyre width/aspect ratio to achieve the original rolling diameter for any rim size. Hope this helps.
phil3uh
Thanks for the info guys, looks like this needs a bit of thinking about. I only picked the car up the other day and there seems to be more pressing issues than wheels and tyres to be sorted first. Cheers Phil
