New boots and panties

Recommended Posts

Thought that would get your attention, debut album by Ian Dury.

Ok, looking at fitting my winter wellies to the 3a. Minlites. fitted with Michelin XAS 165's.

Status at present, chrome 60 spoke wires, fitted to adapters with no spacers and shortened studs and half nuts. No issues and have stayed on the car.

I have trial fitted the alloys with the sleeved nuts which do not bottom out and never would anyway as they are slightly short of the bottom of the hole. I get 11 turns on the nuts before final nip up and torque.#

My question for those in the know is whether or not this is the correct length or I need to change all the wheel studs and fit spacers when going back to wires. If so what length is appropriate as there seems to be two and can this be done on the car or do the hubs need to be removed and finally methodology for doing this.

Front wheels seem to be straight forward splined fitted, - can these just be knocked out and the new ones pulled in with double nuts?

Rear wheels threaded on and peaned over? Grind off the peaned area and unscrew? Refit replacements and pinch to prevent unscrewing?

My nuts look like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Set-of-4-Genuine-Minilite-3-8-UNF-Wheel-Sleeve-Nuts-34mm-length-under-washer-/231266726463?_trksid=p2054897.l5672

Hi Rod,

the usual rule is minimum 8 turns. This give an apprx grip equal to the diameter of the stud.

If you had had the coned nuts (ouch!!) then you would have problems and would require new studs.

If you removed the rear studs then consider refitting the spline'd studs as per 4A.

Hi Roger,

So in essence you are saying that I should have adequate thread given that I am using long sleeved nuts. There is a hell of a lot of support for the stud with these compared to the others used. Pain on the ass to get lined up but once done feels a very positive fit. These are only to be used in normal TRing not track or the "loose".

Not sure I understand your suggestion about swapping for splined studs as per TR4a if I already have threaded holes, How does that work then? Do you just pull the splined part through the thread?

I would certainly not want to change wheel studs unless I have to and them have the faf around with fitting a spacer to take up excess length. Nothing to do with cost more the difficulties of limited work environment (decent garage).

The webs ( the bit that the nuts go through) are incredibly thick and the whole wheel feels as heavy as a spoke wheel but do look pretty and are sooooo much easier to keep clean in the worsening weather. I very much doubt any weight saving but probably flex a lot less than the spoke wheel.

Worst case is that I swap the long stud hubs from the project car as a quickish fix and then swap the studs at leisure

Rod, I think you are going to have vibration issues; your wheels are not perfectly round.

Ian

PS: Is that a short wheelbase model?

God, I laughed so loud I nearly cried, you guys are soooooooooooooooo funny and the medication is obviously still working, just imagine what outrageous things you would say if you didn't take it.

For those PC challenged posters, move the little pointy thing called the "mouse Pointer" over the picture, don't rush now or you'll miss it, when your hand stops shaking from the exertion use the big piggy next to your thumb ( try to remember that it is the hand that is holding the mouse you need to use) click the mouse button with it and you will be able to see a non compressed picture as if by some magic, it happens. For information, the mouse click is a slightly different noise from the one that normally comes from your fingers or hips.

Now wasn't that easy. Go and have a wee sleep now and you can practice how to make even more funny comments to keep us all amused.

Rod,

We need a good laugh down here with all this SNP, Independence, Devo Max cr@p that's going on at present. It's a great car and we are all green with envy so keep posting the pics in whatever format you like.

That's a really different aerodynamic fin you have on the boot - I can't see that it will do a lot of good for stability but might make the steering a bit lighter - where did you get it and how does it fit......!! Will also go well with the oblong wheels!

Made me smile

Cheers

Don't worry about it Alan. I saw the funny side as did others; you should have left it there rather than deleting it and let readers decide although let's be honest it is Rod's response that makes it even more funny ;-). However you are a bad man, surely you have been here long enough to know that whilst Rod is one of the main guys who is quick at belittling and deriding other fellow forum members he can't take it when it is directed, even in good-humour, against him (you should have been more gentle with him) His response to both your and my fun posts is a clear indication of that but we all love him and his SWB TR3 is nice too... Boggie,

In two words " patronising bollocks". You perhaps need to reread what you posted "Rod is one of the main guys who is quick at belittling and deriding other fellow forum members" Ok do tell. I only try to help those that want it from my personal experience. Please do not berate me because I don't have a cure for stupid, there just isn't one.

If you can't see that my post no 9 was tongue in cheek and meant as an attempt at humour it obviously passed so far over your head it was probably dizzy.

Alec,

Got to keep the roof on the bus to give me a fighting chance of avoiding the biological weaponry that you intend to loose on the Scottish borders prior to revisiting the Highland clearances. The last time the English did that we gave you a quantity of Scottish made MP's and even prime ex minister. (Yes revenge is sweet).

If it goes ahead I'm going to move as my house will quadruple it's value for sale to Englanders intent on getting free health care and the other bol***s. Can't move for the English migrants up here now. Free hips and knees while you wait but many NIMBY reside locally.

My most sincere appologies Rod. All meant tongue in cheek, hence the smileys (and the fact that I said we all love you). Didn't mean to pull your wee willy winkie too hard but you do have a bit of a rep for being sarcastic / patronising yourself, or perhaps you meant to use the word condescending above?

(only joking!).

So, sorry if we have you all wrong but perhaps if you included some smileys etc yourself you would not come across so combative / caustic sometimes. I know I am not the only person to think this as the last time you had a pop at me after I had a problem and asked help from the forum I had three people PM me about it.

All the best (honestly),

Ian

Thanks Austin, that's right. We (more than I) IE. I know I am not the only person to have misinterpreted some of Rod's responses as actually being tongue in cheek. All cleared up now though.

Cheers,

Ian

Don't worry about it lads, Rod's never been noted for a long fuse or a tardy response . . . . . :wub::lol:

If you think he can be stroppy on here, try spending an evening with the real McCoy over a few jars . . . . :D;)

Tyson Staffie thinks he's wonderful, candidate for a good licking, which proves he's a good lad under the sardonics . . . . :P

Cheers

The post that was , being "not funny", must have been the one that pointed out that the photographer had made a begineers error.

If you neglect the background then, in the old days, the print would sometimes come back showing a lamp-post sticking out of the subjects head. Dogs also wore lampshades and snooker player where impaled by cues.

The car seems to have a tail-fin because of the bench behind it.

I have no idea if this is funny or not. But it interests me. Thanks for posting this.

I cannot understand why you have arguing about this?

Hey it works!

How do you do that?

Might be able to make mine look like a stretched limo.

It's a shame really, because otherwise this is a well composed shot, with good exposure on a quite difficult colour.

No matter. These days we have the technolgy!

Techincally this is better because you can now see the boot rack for what it is.

I am quite sure this photograph is not funny.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for that

You want Arty, I can do that, but doesn't really show the wheels properly so that other forum member can see what their car will look like when choosing a different set of wheels. Which was the intention.

Personally I hate steels on a side screen car, even have a set, also a set of splined minilte wheels, and painted wires but I still prefer the American bling of chrome wires.

Even though my January 1954 TR2 might be more correct on steels it was fitted with the splined hubs and 48 spoke wires from new, which is how it will be returned, on completion of what is turning out to be a 35 year plus restoration.

And for comparison

Still short but the pics look OK when writing the post.
