I did the same as Jean during the '80 & '90, few drops of 2 stroke marine oil, the point was more to lubricate the Lucas PI system (Pump, PRV and Metering Unit)

Hi

There seems to have been a lot of web talk about additives, but no real conclusions.

Must admit to using marine 2 stroke oil (drops) back in the 1970's in my Triumph and BSA bikes

It seemed to be the done thing around our way

I have been following the web talk because I have some Racor 'Powershot gasoline conditioner' but have not yet had the courage to use it in my 1975 TR6.

Would it help do you think?

By the by, I also have some Racor 'Gasoline conditioner plus'

Same question would it help?

John

I use Lucas Oil fuel treatment www.lucasoil.com/products/fuel-treatment

I used to have issues with the injectors failing. What ever the tips of the injectors would. This seemed to happen every 6 months or so. Someone suggested I try it just as a cleaner but since I have been using I have had no issues with the injectors. I think maybe the extra lubrication helped but don't really know.

I was a little skeptical of the product just because of the name but I do get any smoke using it so all is good.

Any one running high comp and bungs in a 2 stroke oil,or any thing else,

then they will suffer pinking, Oil has no got a very high Octane rating. tried it, never agen

Red X is just a red coloured thin oil, with some dispersants in it, thats all,

Peter, Frost, and i think Millers brought some stuff oot for the ethanol,

quite dear.

I used the MX at week end, first time in aboot 6 months

and aboot 2 gall of fuelin it, v hard to start, and when started, ran with misses all the time,

after 10 mins, when pump had mixed the stuff together a bit moer, it started to run ok,

but topped up to brim with 97, as that aint got any orrid ethanol in it.

was running on Tesco 99, full of ethanol. most 97 aint got it in,

but Shell has, so be wary.

Thats is what I've often read: oil in petrol lowers the octane badly.

But look at this

http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=18810&sid=9bc4a4b04a7071b7d553c2071b903788&start=45#p199984

""...........I took a sample of normal 98 Octane Shell V-Power from a Sydney service station, and blended it with typical engine oil (Shell Helix HX3) at 60:1 (Eldred’s recommended rate). I then had the sample tested in a refinery fuels laboratory for octane. The result (98.7RON) shows that the effect of the oil is minimal with modern fuels. Bear in mind that the accuracy of octane testing is around ±1RON. The upshot of this is that whilst octane is critical for any supercharger, running oil into your Norman does not turn pump fuel into tractor fuel."

Thats useful info for anyone running a vane-type supercharger. Adding traces of oil to protect the PI duirng lay-up might not be too bad on octane: some of that CastrolR maybe ....lovely aroma.

Sounds like water had settled at the bottom of the tank to me and you sucked that through.

That's why the little glass bowl on the TR fuel line is a good idea.

what im trying to say is, any one on v high comp ratio will get pinking by adding an ..oily type stuff to the fuel.

lower comp ratios engines ,then there maybe justification in adding some lube to the fuel.

As also does yer oil grade / age, when engine oil is getting worn oot,

so when the oil starts to revert to its base oil, IE a 20 weight oil, { All 20/50,or what ever multi grade oils are aboot, are all a base oil of the lowest first figure.} and cannot mutate into the higher numbers due to brek doon, then I start to suffer pinking,

Its a good indicator that me oil is past its sell by date.

And is about the same as putting oil in yer fuel, as the thinner oil gets past rings, and mixes wid the charge to lower the Ron number, so ive found oot.

LJ, Yes was aware of the fuel parts settling oot,

pump mixed em up again, was just a note to others woe are not aware of it.

Is there and single additive suitable for a petrol engine that has not had its cylinder head converted (to non-leaded) and can also be used for petrol that contains up to 10% ethanol ?? In other words, I am looking for an additive that does all (if it contains octane booster, then that is not a problem).

Cheers ...AG

Hi Alan,

Glad to see you back safely.

In my opinion, I woudn't use an additive. Just run the engine until the valve seats need doing, which may never happen.

Too many people have complained of headaches etc after using additives!

Cheers

Thank you Graeme. Its for my 71 Zodiac (V6 3.0L) so twin heads. I do add an additive to the fuel in my 1971 TR6 PI (Ethanolmate) with no issues to date. We had a great run out in her today.

Hope to get the Zodiac back from my local garage (welding/re-spray) by mid Oct.

A great pleasure meeting up with you both. Have a good TR trip to California (if you are not already there!)

Hi Alan

Yes there is a single additive - I use Millers VSPE. It now comes in a single bottle with a measuring dose built into the bottle. You just squeeze the bottle and it fills up the dose section. Then just pour the dose section into the tank. Each bottle ( I think) provides enough for 10 tanks. Cost approx £25 per bottle. Here's a link to one of the suppliers
