Thanks for the tip Boggie.

I have been considering LED rear lights for a while now.

Already have LED in my centre (brake + number plate) light, just ordered a pair of COB 380's from

"Better car lighting" at £27 the pair. (+ VAT of course) for the outside rears - these are stop / flasher & tail

380 HP COB LED Stop Tail Neg X 2

Decide to leave the front flasher bulbs for now, but may upgrade to the orange ones in the future.

Same for side lights (located in the headlamp in my case) & I already have halogen headlamps which are very good.

I have also been looking at an LED upgrade. Some vendors extol the virtues of using red LEDs under red lenses as white ones alegedly tend to iluminate pink.

Does anyone have any experience or comments on this before I get my wallet out?

No, they are white - this company do not seem to do red ones - maybe the COB technology does not allow red ?

any way ordinary bulbs are white, so I would have thought they would be OK. Will report back with Photos when they arrive.

OK, The COB LED stop / tail bulbs arrived this week, & I have just got around to trying them.

Colour wise, I do not have a problem, but even though they have LED's on the side as well as the end, they are not any improvement over standard bulbs in a TR3. I think in a rear lamp which takes the bulb horizontaly (TR4 etc ?) they would be good, but the TR3 lenses are positioned to be exactly in line with the filament of a normal bulb, whereas the LED element is about ½" above the lens part, & so view from a distance the normal bulb looks brighter. Would probably work well on the front of a TR3 etc where the bulb would point forward. I have only a single filament bulb here (flasher) as my sidelights are in the headlamp reflector.

So, I will be passing these on on the Buy / sell / trade area to anyone who is interested.

Hi Bob,

Exactly what I found with the sides screen rear lights, no brighter in rear view but illuminated the ground well. I agree that they would work well in a Tr4 as the bulbs are parallel to the ground. Before you sell them on perhaps it would be worth trying a strip of that stick on mirror stuff behind the light.

If I could find Led's like these used on the video I would try them

The LED cluster in the above video have been places behind the reflector. For the best result we want something similar which is at the same height as the lens, which is lower down. I think I have seen some like this, with all the light coming out sideways in only one direction, but they are very expensive.

Had a look at these, trouble is only the ones near the centre will be at the right height for the lens in the red cover.

The COB ones are different construction - there are four LEDS around the side, & 1 on the end.

The cover a large area each, & consist of a large number of "chips" see link below:

I have come to the conclusion that the sidescreen rear lights are best with a "point source" of light, which an old fashioned bulb gets quite close to.
