christopher.brayley
The gearbox ('J' Type with O/D on 3rd & 4th) of my TR6 mysteriously 'seized' (stuck between gears) whilst in my local garage for some minor , unrelated jobs. (Heavy handed mechanic?) Its been sent to a gearbox specialist who is having difficulty pulling it apart to see the damage. I seem to be faced with replacing the gearbox. A. They seem to be as rare as hen's teeth, 'though I find Revington seem to have recons for anything up to over £3k! Classicgearboxes claim to recon gearboxes but there is no indication of price, I have made an enquiry. B. high-gearengineering.co.uk offer a Ford Sierra 5 speed box with all the fitting bits needed for £2250 + VAT & Delivery. Three questions: - 1. Can anyone advise a reliable source of reconned exchange TR6 'J' gearboxes + Overdrive other than the above? 2. Does anyone have experience of the Sierra 'upgrade'? 3. Will the Sierra upgrade affect the 'value' of my car? (I have had it 26 years and it went a major refurb with Rees Bros od Aldershot a couple of years ago and is probably worth North of £20K) ChrisB

AlanT
There are half a dozen competant/skilled TR gbox builders known to members here. Its not impossible to dismantle and re-build one yourself. Get this box back and find someone with the tools and knowledge. Hope you have not suffered much damage so far. marko
I have a "grumpy" old School Triumph mechanic that has been rebuilding TR Gearboxes since the late 60's. We're in Suffolk though....www.classicmarks.co.uk
RogerH
Hi Chris, Hardy Engineering in leatherhead just off the M25 Junc 9 I think). They sorted my gearbox and overdrive a treat in July. Gearbox = £500 O/D = £400 Roger

Ade_TR6
Try the TR Shop in Chiswick, they have some advertised for outright purchase with no return required/ expected...
Kneeslider
Overdrive repair services in Sheffield rebuilt my gearbox about 5 years ago for a very reasonable sum. (Definitely sub £500) They appear to be the remains of Laycock De Normanville. As I had the gearbox out for a clutch change, it seemed wise to get the crunchy synchro on 3rd sorted out at the same time.

christopher.brayley
Hi Chris B, See PM. Cheers. Not sure what you meant by "See PM"? Tried it in @Search and it does not allow this search. Can you advise? Thanks Tom.
RogerH
Hi Chris, if you look at the top righthand corner of the screen there is an open envelope. Click on this and you will find your PM box (Personal memo). Within the bits and pieces of the PM box you can find a way of getting any PM to flag up on your e-mail system. Chilp3
Hi Chris, Sorry to hear about the gearbox problems with your TR6. I would support the recommendation to approach Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead. I have used them before and have been very pleased with their quality of workmanship and advice in the first instance. Furthermore they are reasonably close to you in Kent. Regards, Peter

thescrapman
If Marko is still using the same "grumpy" mechanic who did my saloon box (before he moved in with Marko when he was at Stoke Ferry) about 6 years ago, then a +1 from me. You could also try Mike Papworth who is Coventry area. Cheers Colin

Stanpartmanpartwolf
Back to the beginning: "minor unrelated work" caused this issue, right? So why are we facing a rebuild...stuck "between gears"...what's that? If, say, someone removed the gearlever with it in gear & replaced it in the wrong selector cup, the whole lot jams. I have encountered others that have hopped across the gate & tried to select two gears at once. Would it not be appropriate to take a proper look before talking of £3k+ repairs? If they "can't get it apart", nobody's relieved the overdrive pressure, have they? Can we get a bit more background on this first, perhaps, then a rescue may be possible?
