monty
Hi All, Recently fitted a new differential oil seal (improved rubber seal) with no real problem. Did not touch the bearing & just replaced the seal & tightened the flange to recommended torque. Now when changing gear there seems to be a small 'clunck' when the drive is taken up if not getting the perfect gear change. I did not really notice this before the new seal was fitted so have I possibly disturbed anything which will have caused this annoying trait? As I said, all that was done was disconnecting the prop shaft, removing the flange & old oil seal, inserting new seal, refitting the flange & tightening & reattaching the prop shaft in the original position. What about 'pinion preload'? Cheers, Monty.
MRG1965
Hi Monty, if the sound is more of a "ting" or "ping", this sound indicates the propshaft UJ is worn. This may have been caused if the uj was twisted to an angle it does not usually reach in normal and this may have moved the needle rollers about a bit. But if its a clunk and everything is still tight inc propshaft flange, maybe the bearings have not liked being reloading. You have not stated live axle or IRS, but the same works for both, just more uj's on the IRS. Mark.
peejay4A
Have you got wire wheels? If so check that they're tight because they can clunk if there's wear in the splines or they're not tight.
