engine number question

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I received an email today from the heritage people regarding my certificate saying that my engine number did not match their records, this doesn't surprise me as the gearbox may also be an exchange unit as it has no ID number stamped into it.

My question is does anyone know where I would find out if my engine is a TR4a engine or not. I've done a search on the forum but it's been fruitless and a google search was not much better, the engine number is CT/59609-E ( I assume the E denotes exchange).

Any inf would be helpful.

regards

Gavin

My 4A with original engine is stamped CT62192E so I think yours is most likely a TR4A engine.

My chassis is CTC62114 so the engine and chassis numbers are quite close.

You could email Jon Marshall, Registrar, to check what he knows - email address in back of TR Action

Thanks Paul & Roger, I'll try emailing Jon Marshall and see if he has any records that can confirm the engine number is a TR4a engine. are there any visual differences or simple tell's that may help tell me whether its a 4a or a 4 engine?

Hi Gavin,

TR4 commission numbers closed at not much over 40K . . . . 40304 rings a bell . . . .

TR4A numbers commenced with 50001.

Engine numbers were generally not that far apart from commission numbers.

59609 should indicate a 1965 4A engine.

Cheers

Alec

Hi Gavin,

firstly with my grey cell now functioning Factory Replacement Engine had the Prefix FRExxxx.

So you number ending in E simply denotes it is an engine number.

Both the 4 and 4A had the prefix CT, however the TR4 enigne run didn't go as high as 5xxxxx. I think the TR4's stopped in the 30xxx range.

Your number thus is a TR4A number probably about 1965(ish)

Hi Gavin, my TR4A was built on the 24th September 1965 and has the engine number CT/60530 E, so it's 900 or so later, depending on what was available at the time some had SU carbs and some like mine had(well used to have before it sprouted Webers) Strombergs. The 4 pot engines are virtually all the same, although some with the smaller 1991or whatever cc, the differences are mainly in the ancillaries (carbs/exhaust manifolds etc) and the heads, the blocks, cranks and cams can be traced right back to the Massy Fergi tractors where this all started.

Cheers Rob

Hi all

Thank you for all the info, from what you've all been saying I'm happy to conclude that it's an older 1965 ish 4a engine fitted to what I believe to be a 1967 4a (age to be confirmed by the heritage people). Its good to know so that I'm buying the correct parts for the engine when it comes time to rebuild it, here is a link to show you what she looks like.

My 3a had its 26180-E replaced with what I assume was a factory rebuild 4 engine which has the number TSA 434 FRE. I assume that the original origin / date is lost once they become FRE ?
