Fuel consumption and IWE Harrogate

Recommended Posts

My TR 3A was entered both in the Harewood Hill Climb and in the IWE at Harrogate. We did 430 miles as indicated on the Tripmeter. Total Fuel 57 litres of 99 octane = 34.4 mpg driving on the A1andA(1M). Cruising at 65mph mostly, but a bit of a thrash at Harewood but slid a lot due to a wet track.

Absolutely torrential for two hours solid from Durham to Dunbar on the Sunday return journey but hood down all the way going down on the Thursday.

Came away happy though as we won " Car of the Show" IWE 2014.!!! Thanks to everyone who helped me get this car going and now looking so well.

Hi Bill

Well done on the "Car of the Show".

Must admit I was pretty dumbfounded to get the Ken Richardson Trophy.....I had forgotten it even existed.

VHP529 owes a massive debt to my old friend and previous co-owner Hugh Wilson, who owned the car from 1972 until 2009.

He sold me a half share in the car ( complete but a real mess) , which we rebuilt as a partnership in 1979-80 then jointly owned until he moved to the US in 1989 with his family and work for Canadair/Learjet in Wichita and then Gulfstream in LA.

VHP529 went state side for quite a few years.

Tragically he died flying (his first love) in 2009. He would be chuffed to bits to see the car get Kens award. Bless you Hugh.

Was great to see the two works cars together again. Last photographed in Jan 58 about to embark on the Silver City Channel Air Bridge from Lydd to Le Touquet for the Monte start in Paris.

For comparison my weekend was 660 miles, at an unbelievable 31.5mpg ( 4.1:1 rear end doesn't help with cruising), with a journey time on the way home of 5 and a 1/2 hrs for 330 miles.....you do the maths  umh...

Hello Bill and congratulations! 34 mpg seems impressive. I'm new to TR ownership and looking forward to some longer runs out and checking the mpg out of interest. Still to get the soft top fitted.

What's the spec of your car, standard engine with overdive? I wonder if the 99 octane makes a big difference?

Regards

Andrew

cripes, although haven't done a scientific assessment, i reckon I'm getting low 20's at best, although I expect much of that get sucked out of my dustbin sized exhaust unburnt !

I checked my fuel consumption-havent done it for ages and last time, local driving, it was low 20s. I did 146 miles-checked this on the internet in case the odometer was out-and used 22 litres of fuel, which I make around 30mpg-didn't think it would do that well, very pleasing. Didn't drive slow, variety of speeds.

37mpg in the 4A. Driving conservatively in the rain especially after getting a tank slapper on joining the A46. Weird because I wasn't going quickly at all. Diesel spill maybe.

Dear Andrew

114DZ has its Original engine , reputedly on 44, 000 but supposedly had $2000 spent on the engine in the mid 80's.( re grind , new pistons and valve gear?) I fitted a 2 1/4" 4 branch exhaust with two silencers all straight through 2 1/4" pipe work. I've not done any crank or valve work at all other than cleaning.

Plus last month I fitted twin HS6's on a TR4A manifold and with Accuspark electronic . distributor. Also K&N cone shaped air filters .

Lastly it has usual R&P , electric fan, narrow pulleys and Suzuki Swift alternator so not exactly standard, but it goes like stink. Can easily average 50 to 60 mph on good roads .

No overdrive as yet but that's the Winterproject as I now have most of the bits.

Hi Iain

Thanks for your recent photos and also on your award which I felt was vey appropriate.

I vow to return with my Hardtop and Marchal roof lamp as it seems to help in competitions!!!

The interior shot you sent is intriguing and I think they stern object is either a second trip master ( Gatso often had two , one for the navigator and one for the drivers sight line, or just perhaps a chess clock ? As it looks to have a stop and start buttons on the top?

I liked the Stowage for the Dunlop pressure gauge!!

Regards
