lindatr4
Can anyone recommend a suitable antifreeze for my TR4. From the research that I have done it would appear that there are numerous products to choose from and different colours to boot! It has been suggested to me that green is the colour to go for. Has anyone had experience or knowledge of Comma products? http://www.commaoil.com but then they have a number of different products.
RogerH
The bog standard 'Bluecol' is very good. Halfords do their version and is very good. Comma is very good - use the blue or classic variety. Do not use the orange stuff as used in modern cars (OAT base) this may damage seals etc. The has been a lot of talk on here recently about the 'waterless coolants'. The suppliers swear by it, others swear at it. The big car manufacturers do not use it. Roger
Fireman049
I well remember in the 50's when we used to put Bluecol into cars it was very important that this be drained as soon as winter was over as it caused intense build-up of thick brown sludge! I suppose that it's different now? One of the best anti-freeze's then was sold by Boots the Chemists. Tom.
MikeF
Antifreeze is now recommended more as coolant additive as it will prevent formation of sludge, that's why you leave it in all the time these days, not just in winter. As Roger says use the blue stuff to be compatible with old car technology. So far as I can see the water free coolants are essentially the neat main ingredient of ordinary antifreeze, but presumably without the anticorrosion package, which is why you mustn't top them up with water. Don't see the point of them personally. So far as I recall they don't claim that your engine will run cooler, just that it can get hotter before it boils....
