Registering an imported vehicle

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

I contacted the DVLA shortly after I bought the 250 and they confirmed that I would get an age related plate- F in this case. I was wondering if it's possible to register the car before it's roadworthy and place it on a SORN?

Cheers

Dealing with the DVLA to register an imported classic is not difficult.

You need to have an MOT certificate, insurance cover note (showing the chassis number), have paid the import duties etc and be able to prove the age of the vehicle.

A heritage certificate deals with the vehicle age issue which means that you will get the appropriate age-related registration number allocated. Insurance is obvious - all you need is a cover note from your chosen insurer. The MOT is obvious - the car needs to be in a roadworthy condition. The taxes need to have been paid and the car needs to be on the NOVA system as DVLA will check this.

All you need to do then is fill in the DVLA V55/5 form which is not as difficult as it first appears as most of it is not relevant and will be left blank.

Send off everything to DVLA with the £55 fee payment and you should receive your V5c in the post, having already received your various documents back with a tax disc, V948 number plate authorisation certificate and a replacement MOT certificate showing the registration number in addition to the chassis number.

DVLA do reserve the right to inspect the car in order to make sure it is what it is supposed to be, prior to registration being completed.

Thanks for the replies. As I suspected the car has to be roadworthy-which is a few years away at the moment. I can at least get the Heritage Certificate in the meantime though.

As stated above, make sure you have all of your ducks lined up!!

The car I am dealing with has been in the UK over 20 years so no NOVA, all details sent off to HMRC and a follow up phone call made last week, I quote:

"we currently have a backlog and are short staffed, we received your application on 4th August and we are currently dealing with applications dated 7th July, call back in two weeks for an update"

If you have no NOVA document deal with this now, the car will not need to be roadworthy for this part, I can't comment on the DVLA yet but this entire process will not be quick as I previously stated.

Good luck

Just for reference, the form i filled out at the beginning of August to register a car from abroad must have slipped through the backlog seeing as the logbook etc came through yesterday!!!

I was not expecting it so quick thats for sure!!

What is the NOVA system pls. When I imported my TR3a in 2006, I paid the VAT but I wasn't told anything about NOVA.

Just a note of caution

If you don't get a NOVA cert within 14 days of the Import arrival date - the fine is £5 per day !!!! - soon mounts up.

I didn't actually import the vehicle myself. I bought the car off a Company through Ebay and they'd already paid all the customs duty and taxes. I'm going to check with HMRC about the NOVA scheme. Their website info on NOVA appears to only apply to imported roadworthy cars which mine clearly is not.

I'll let you know what I 've found out.

Hi again,

Canj, if your car is a recent import you will probably have a NOVA it's just a letter, Alan, in all probability, you will have the previous "C"forms so should be ok, if you don't have the import forms showing that VAT has been paid you will need a NOVA, so apply now!

It does not just apply to roadworthy vehicles, it's all vehicles.

Problem I have is that the car has been sat in the UK for about 20 years so ther is no paperwork to verify duty has been paid

Regards

Tom/All

I contacted HMRC and spoke to a very helpful chappie. He advised me that because my TR was imported in March 2013, a C&E 389 document would suffice. After a bit of rummaging I found that the importer had already included a filled in form ready for me to send to HMRC. Better late than never I suppose. So I've to include this along with the original sales invoice and a covering letter and send the lot to:-

National Units For Personal Transport

HMRC

Building 22

Priory Court

St. John's Road

Dover

CT17 9SH

Tom

If your vehicle has been in the UK for 20 years then this would also be the route you could take, as long as you had your original sales invoice.

The NOVA system was only introduced in the second half of last year.

Hi All,

NOVA means 'Notice of Vehicle Arrival' which is self explanatory once you know that.

If you have a imported vehicle with no proof that duties have been paid, then you may find that you have pay them, even though they will have been paid as nothing is released without them being paid.

We all fall foul of something like this from time to time and all these events are great teachers, but we could do without the trouble really.

Just trying to register an import AND reclaim the original registration as it was originally a UK car. DVLA not very helpful at all, they give you some written details of what you need to provide, which is written in some kind of jargon that would take a professor to work out, rather than just saying to you, 'provide a Heritage Certificate or BMIHT Letter of dating.'

Oh well, onward and upward.

All the best.

Dave.

My 250 was driven and MOT'd without a bonnet or number-plates OK, but I had to take it to the DVLA testing station for examination of the body number etc. (they would not accept a photo). Took about two minutes, but I had to hire a trailer for that, as I had also removed the front wing at the time of the examination, and didn't want to 'risk it'.

HI John

I suspect that wasn't recently, I did exactly the same with my 250 some years ago, since the local DVLA offices have disappeared things have changed, including NOVA.

My current 250 (not the one in my previous posts) does indeed have the C & E forms so will not need a NOVA as Alan states, the 4A I;m trying to sort is a very different matter!

I'll keep you posted

Probably a very silly question, I've just imported a TR250 and have started filling in the V55/5 and when I get to question 11 onwards it keeps referring to the certificate on conformity? Do I need one of these?

No, on the basis they were never issued for the car so none exist. Just fill in as much as you can, ignoring things like emissions etc. Mass/weight you could probably get from a manual like Haynes or the original.

I used to import and export a lot of vehicles, most new or under 10 years old and it was easy, at least when DVLA had local offices. They always say they have the right to inspect but with over 100 imports, I never saw them once.

Hi All

I thought I might update you on the saga! NOVA sent off with other bits and pieces to DVLA including MOT failure stating the car had no registration. Sent back by DVLA stating that the car must have a ' valid' MOT apparently they expect an MOT with the chassis number which they will change and re-issue, nothing else was mentioned in the DVLA letter.

Duly sent off with new valid MOT, 10 days pass and it is returned rejected! They now will not accept a dating letter from British Motor Heritage and are requesting evidence of dating, proof of manufacture etc etc. I've spoken to Gaydon and the confirm that whilst every other EU country will accept a dating letter DVLA will only accept the full certificate!! 28 day turnaround from Gaydon!

Our hopes of getting this car on the road this season are fading fast, it's been sat idle for well over two months now due to government cutbacks and civil servants who appear to be under so much pressure they don't know their ar*e from their elbow.......rant over!!

Hacked off!!
