You may recall I had an issue with starting, now fixed - (broken wire behind the starter button).

 

However, I have an ongoing elecamitrickery issue with the horn and drivers side indicator

  1. The horn makes a tiny click just the one, but no honkety honk.
  2. The driver's side indicator flashes rapidly at the back but no flash at the front
  3. ....but the same front bulb works when the side lights are on (I did change the bulbs).
  4. Passenger side indicators are fine.

 

The issue started after I had taken the grille off to install the fan and cowl, during which the indicator wires were unplugged.

 

So far as I can see I through the oil n grime covered wires I put them back in roughly the same bullets (although having more females than males is very confusing so who knows !)

 

I have checked the obvious earths, but all seem to be connected as before.

 

I have even tried putting the wires in what I think are the wrong female bullets but with no more luck.

 

Is it just coincidence or do the horn and RH indicator have a common thread (of wire)?

 

Any suggestions as to where I should look next? Am I missing another earthing issue?

 

The wiring dia shows me the colours (in black and white) and I seem to be there, but if anyone has a pic of the wires that connect as they pass over theRHS arch, then that might help me check if I is right.

 

Of course I would have brought her up to Harrogate for another practical seminar session in the fields, but sadly 'she who tells me cross subsidises "that" (darned) TR' thinks that the white painted villages of Andaluthia the following weeks would be a much better idea (not in the TR I might add!)

 

For now I can use my right arm to indicate right, but its much harder getting MG's to get out of the way if all you can do is wave - especially with a bloody hardtop getting in the way !

No immediate help, Austin, but only a suggestion for the future...

 

Take lots of digital photos before anything is taken apart -- it's surprising how often they'll be referred to as it goes back together.

Suggest:

Find the 4 wire cable that comes up from the stator tube.

The original colours according to the wiring diag are 1) Green 2) Green/Red 3) Green/White and 4) Brown/Black

If yours agree with this then the Green is mated the Green/Brown (from the flasher unit then into the indicator switch)

The Green/Red is mated to Green/Red - Left Indicators

The Green/White is mated to Green/White -Right Indicators

These Green/Red should also appear on the passenger side as the wires run around in the loom

 

The Brown/Black wire is Earth but only when the horn is pushed (Low side switch) and is connected to black wires on the horns

The horns are live at all times from A2 on the fuse block through the Brown/Green wires

 

If your stator tube wires are different colours suggest you work out whats what as you could blow the flasher unit if the gods are not with you.

All side lights should be Red to Red, Main Blue/White, Dip Blue/Red

Flasher lamp: check bulbholder contacts are clean, and check there is 12 volts at the bulbholder with ingnition and flasher switched on.

 

Horn: as said , horn has a permanent live feed, so check that horn inner terminal, ( remove horn cover) has 12v, and that other terminal has a circuit to earth with push operated. If wiring ok then horn is faulty, it may click but not sound so you may need to clean the horn contact and adjust it till it sounds, its very sensitive and should spark a little as the contact makes/breaks.

 

Faul is probably bad bullet connector ; remove outer, clean bullets with emery and fit new outer.

To check the horn, you don't even need the TR running or the ignition on. Get a jumper wire and go from the battery terminal to the wire at the horn. It should honk. If it does, then you know the horn is good. I would suspect the wiring inside the horn or the wire in the stator tube of the steering column or, as suggested above, it may be the horn button in the control head which is corroded. Once this is apart, a bit of fine sandpaper should bring it right back to bright copper. Do both parts.

 

I did a lot of rallies from 1959 to 1965 in my TR3A and when I did the restoration from 1987 to 1990, the fronts of the horns were packed with gravel and sand which was almost as hard as concrete.

Don.

Horns on sidescreen cars (& maybe 4's as well) have battery voltage permanantly connected (via a fuse) usually a brown wire.

To sound them the second terminal (not shown on your photo) is grounded via the horn push button.
