Overdrive gearbox

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have an overdrive gearbox but the imput shaft is a different size. How difficult is it to change this, or is it easier to swap the back end onto the original box.

Also the shaft is 10mm shorter and 5mm thinner than the original, is it possible to just change the clutch and bearing set up, I think it came out of a Triumph 2000, everything else measures the same

Regards

Ron

Hi Ron,

I use a T2500 gearbox in my TR4A. It has a 1" input shaft compared to the 1.25" shaft on a TR g/b. You can use a GT6 clutch plate and I use an uprated one available from M@ss. You will also need to use the TR nose and release bearing carrier.

You may find the pressure of the o/d is not high enough, in which case you can have it rebuilt to TR standard.

Cheers

Hi Graeme, Thanks for the reply. The imput shaft is 1 inch, If I use the nose from the TR4 and the bearing assembly I assume I will have to change the seal , does the 2500 seal fit the nose with just a smaller hole for the shaft ? and I assume from your info that the GT6 clutch (cover and disc) will bolt onto the TR4 flywheel

Regards

Ron

The TR4 clutch cover is different to the 4A. So you will need to get a 4A clutch cover and get the flywheel drilled to suit, or get a 4A flywheel.

I'm not sure if you can just use a different friction plate with your existing clutch cover.

Some T 2000 A type overdrives had only 4 operating springs as against 8 on TR & 2.5/2500 cars.

J type is another game.

Speedo drive ratio wil be squiffy.

Hi Ron

You have a TR4 yes, and a 2000 o/d box?

Use the tr4 flywheel and clutch cover, with the 8.5inch saloon friction plate,

Runs together no probs.

John

I have the same on my 3A no problems so far.

What seal are you thinking of Ron ? I used a tr bearing and support (nose) with its seal which afik is the same as the 2000 one a TR clutch cover and a 2000 pressure plate

I have a T2000 O/D box in my TR3. I re-drilled the flywheel to take a GT6 clutch complete, leaving the gearbox untouched.

O/D had to be fixed anyway, so the specialists who did it upgraded to 8 springs, & the correct rear housing to fit TR rear gearbox mount.

The rear flange (to propshaft) is different on the T2000 unit, but a TR one will fit with no problems, alternatively the flange could be modified buy elongating two of the holes, & turning some metal from the centre. (I used a TR flange)

Remaining problem is the speedo drive ratio. TR is 2.5:1 reduction, T2000 is 3.5 - quite different.

I used a T2.5PI MK 2 speedo innards to rebuild my TR speedo - this give the correct turns per mile of 840.

Other solution is to have speedo re-calibrated.

Bob.
