foster461
A question about the metal strap that goes between the rear of the top cover and the rear mount. I know some TR's had one, my TR3A didnt but should it ?. Did all TR's have one originally or was there a point in time when they were introduced to solve a vibration/rattle problem ? Don H.
My TR3B has one of those straps, but it also has had a 4-synchro gearbox since the start.I always understood they were a late - very late -- addition. Maybe never during TR3A production? ISTR it being described someplace over the years as a TR3B and forward part. Stuart and Viv will probably come in with better info. The strap is called an "anti-rattle strap" and shows up in the amendments to the TR2-3B Spare Parts Catalog 4th Edition. Note the clamp-on mass damper design used to resolve vibration complaints in TR4s (technical service bulletin from May 1963) shows up as a sidescreen part too in SPC4ED. vivdownunder
I stand to be corrected, but recall seeing a reference to this strap being introduced beginning CT numbered 4 synchro gearboxes from the later TCF series TR3B onward. It went between the gear lever cap through-bolt and lug where the gearbox attached to the rubber mount. The new strap was said to be yet another response to vibration and gear lever rattle complaints. Perhaps it helped as the 4 synchro gearbox didn't vibrate or rattle as much as the 3 synchro. Viv. Don H.
That's pretty much what I've heard too, Viv. My car (TSF202L) was built in April 1962 with what on reflection is the appropriately named "rationalized gearbox" -- a TSF-stamped 4-synchro 'box with that anti-rattle strap. Mine is pretty clearly a TR4 'box pressed into service to build a TR3B, so it got the TR4 strap. TR3Bs, as we've discussed, don't really have any rules, so it's perfectly reasonable for an earlier one to have a gearbox not normally associated with that series. stuart
The strap was also supposed to stop the possibility of cracks developing on the gear change extension cover housing. Stuart.
foster461
Thanks guys for the info. It looks like this strap and other measures were introduced around the time of the TR3B/TR4 and was never fitted to the TR3A. Retrofitting it to the TR3A probably wont do any harm, may do some good. peejay4A
Just as an aside, I looked into this for my gearbox/overdrive but as it's a J type and the rear mount is different, it won't work.

Fireman049
I was always under the impression that this strap was as an added support for the remote gear change casting to prevent undue stresses on the remote which lead to cracking? Tom.
