John Thornton
Whilst pushing along in third gear I engaged overdrive which resulted in a loud chatter of what sounded like gears trying to mesh but not quite getting there, on the second attempt in top gear all went well but whilst cruising the overdrive started making a considerable noise. At low power the overdrive appears to engage and work correctly but with a bit of throttle applied the noise starts. Any ideas!
AlanT
You have broken something. I could guess, but it really does not matter. Stop driving. Remove. http://www.overdrive-repairs.co.uk/ This will get worse if you drive and you are already going to get a fair-sized bill, unless you are very lucky. These are not too hard to strip and fix yourself if you a good mechanic. Edited July 17, 2014 by AlanT
Richardtr3a
I had my gearbox removed by Alan at C&B on Monday drove it up to Sheffield, repaired on Tuesday and refitted by Alan on Wednesday. If you take the whole gearbox it comes back properly adjusted and does not leak. Make sure that you are using ORS in Sheffield and no 0one with a similar name elsewhere. It worked for me after months and years of problems. Good luck Edited July 17, 2014 by Richardtr3a
AlanT
The Sheffield guy worked at the original factory and has original spares amd machines. There are bits in an OD that are borderline on being too small for the job. They get battered about by sudden engagement, under high pressure, and cracks develop. The bits that break off can chew things up.
John Thornton
Thanks for the advice guys, I am in the process off removing the gearbox cover to have a look at oil levels and gearbox removal. I will let you know how I get on.

John Thornton
Just a quick note to let you know that having had the overdrive refurbished by Overdrive Repair Services and run the car for a couple of weeks the overdrive is ok now. The change into overdrive is harsh but I am hoping the at that will settle down. Thanks for all the help. John
ianc
To avoid a heavy bang when engaging overdrive, make sure you have the accelerator hard down. Don't disengage on the over-run, just press the accelerator lightly as you flick the switch (you can do this whilst braking if you heel-and-toe). Ian Cornish
AlanT
ORS have probably raised the pressure by fitting new seals etc. You can minimise the harsh engaging by learning the best driving technique. The A-types are a bit bumpy.
4Mal
It should be ok under hard acceleration. Is it better in higher gears than 2nd? A dip of the clutch, when engaging, will smooth it.
tim hunt
Mal is quite right. The overdrive on my 4A was uprated by ORS some years ago. Engagement is smooth and instantaneous under reasonably brisk acceleration but under gentler acceleration a slight dip of the clutch will eliminate any risk of a slight snatch in the transmission. After the uprating I found that when coming out of o/d it was necessary to get the revs just right with an accurate blip of the throttle to get completely smooth disengagement. It is easier briefly to dip the clutch. Tim
4Mal
Should have said that mine was updated by ORS as well. I find that it's a good match with the "logic box" and the momentary switch. I mainly use it in 3rd and 4th.
John Thornton
I am a bit nervous of switching into overdrive with the accelerator hard down as I don't want to break something, instead I just dip the clutch, which works well for my style of driving. No need to be nervous, thats the way they are designed to work. Stuart.
