White Wall Tyres - White Wall Trims

Recommended Posts

Hello again wise ones,

I have just ordered wire wheels and think I will go fo 165/80/15 tyres.

I would appreciate your opinion on thin white walls. I know they are expensive but as I only do 3000 or so miles a year it would be worth the cost as they would lst several years. Has anyone used the white wall trims from Moss? They would be a very much cheaper alternative to the manufactured white walls.

Thanks

Charles

PS I did try and post this earlier and it seemed to disapear into the ether?

White wall trims are difficult to keep undamaged. Go anywhere near a kerb even when parking at the side of the road and you can tear them, also where the trim rests against the tyre it scuffs the rubber and puts a small groove in it. I've tried them without grease behind and also fitted dry, can't find a suitable system to prevent tyre damage.

I thought the add-on whitewall trims were not legal -

I must be wrong.

I have been looking at getting a set of thin whitewall tyres.

The guy who usually has a tyre stand at IWE does have

thin whitewalls, but not in 165 size.

Recently, I discovered this source:

Opinions sought.

And Yes, they are expensive.

Had the trims fitted to the tr4 surrey, there wasnt any damage to the trims after a season driving but the white became brown.

Almost looked like the tyres rubbed their colour in the trim. This was actually in the material so clearing wont help.

Thanks Fireman, I agree white walls are associated with America but I feel that if it enhances the car in the owners eyes then why not.....and "dont call me Shirley".

Edwin, in the 60s I had an MG and as a teenager I spotted that the tyres had tramlines moulded into the tyre at just the position thin whitewalls would be. I found a white rubber paint and pained between the lines. I had to redo it every couple of months to keep it white for the same reason you mention of tyre colour bleeding into the white making brown. I see you can still get this in either a liquid or in a white pen. see these links. If the trims looked OK then I could re-paint them so maybe that would be the solution for a 165/80/15 tyre expecially as the standard black can be bought some £100+ cheaper each! Think this may well be the answer.

Alan, I wonder if those tyres are tubeless? it doesn't say.

Thanks all

Charles,

I did notice that tubed or tubeless was not specified.

One tends to assume tubeless these days, although

being a "vintage" tyre company, maybe not.

The other clue is in the fact that they do list tubes on

their webpage.

I have a page on wheels & tyres on the TR4a showing different options.

You can buy whitewalls in the UK from Vintage Tyres:

Best wishes

The original steels look very good on the car Edwin and I have to say the whitewalls suit the whole package in the photos. You still have the positive camber wishbones on the front I see.

165R-15 tubeless narrow whitewalls are about £100/tire over here, from one well-known online vendor. It's a common size for the vintage VW crowd. A lot less common now on vintage TRs that they may have been originally. My car, for example, was delivered with whitewalls in 1962 but I don't think it's had another set since. For some cars they can indeed complete a certain look.

Thanks Don,

Thanks, those images of the whitewalls look great and have pushed me over the edge and will look brilliant with my spanking new wires, I will be buying them! We sold our place in Naples FL just this March after nearly 10 years, shame I didn't organise them while I was there but didn't find and buy the TR4 until after we got back!

Bet its cold there at the mo.

Regards

Charles

I simply don't know Alan, white wall tyres of any description have never exactly been on my personal bucket list, hence I've never investigated the legality or otherwise . . . .

Perhaps someone with a burning desire to put white walls on his or her TR might do the legwork ?

Cheers

Alec

For those that were following this thread my solution was to go for inserts from the VW site on eBay and cost just £52. Fitted to new tyres and following the makers instructions to lubricate behind the inserts with red grease to stop rubbing and bleed through of the black.post-12736-0-69088400-1443689210_thumb.jpg
