SU Electric Petrol Pump

Recommended Posts

Hello Tom,

I have used both SU and Facet pumps and currently have the latter on my TR3A.

The benefit is that they fill the carbs before you crank the engine, giving the battery and the starter a much easier time. If they pack up they are easy to change and there is no risk at all of a split diaphragm fiiling the sump with petrol.

I will not go back to a mechanical pump.

Regards,

Willie

If fitting an electric pump, feed the supply through one of those safety cut-out devices (as fitted to TR6s) so that in the event of a crash, the power is turned off automatically.

A properly rebuilt pump as done by Dave Davies will last you forever. The only way a split diaphragm will allow fuel down into the sump is because most rebuild kits dont include the oil seal in the lower pump lever or the pump is so old the original seal is knackered, you can usual tell this because engine oil will be weeping out the side of the casting.

Stuart and others - three quick questions:

1. Is it easy to see whether a fuel pump has a nice healthy oil seal present, or does it require a strip down?

2. Do you know whether the new pumps available are ok in this and other regards?

3. Do you have contact info for David Davies? I can't seem to find him

My pump works well, but I do have the oil weep...

Thanks!
