The vast majority of DR3A motors are single speed.

 

There are a couple of two-speed variants, one got fitted to the 4A.

 

Any DR3A can be easily modified to get the same two-speed operation as the 4A.

 

The problem is to get the right kind of 3-position switch.

An alternative method is to use the existing switch for on/off and add another switch for speed selection.

The two-speed ones have wires coming out not push-on contacts.

 

Whilst this is on your mind, undo the long bolts, pull the end-cap off and inspect the carbon-blocks.

If these wear down the commutator will get wrecked.

This may look OK but only has a few thou of copper left and is more or less scrap.
