Can anyone advise on quality and fit for late type TR3a door latch assembly . Was considering re chroming but not sure if it can be done without completely striping it down . Chroming as a assembly will surly lock it all up ?

Alternately if any one has a set in half reasonable condition ?.

Also heard repro strikers don't fit ?

Advice please

Mike

It won't jam up if you plate it without dismantling. You just won't get the plating to "throw" into the corners very well.

We chromed a Mazak petrol-pump without stripping and it ran fine after.

But you need a plater used to doing these tricky jobs. An ordinary commercial shop won't do.

Hi Mike,

If you have the original door strikers set them up till happy with the latching of the door, before rechroming. If you did not mark left and right you may need to swap them round to get the best fit. If you have a repro and then compare to an original you will probably see that the ST one has been filed, ground generally butchered to get it to fit and chrome is missing anyway.

I spent hours trying to make repros and shim /gasket fit but eventually went back to the originals and within 10 minutes had the doors shutting perfectly, most of the time spent sorting the previous efforts.

Mark them up and send for plating, latches can be plated to good effect and it is only really the door striker and end plate you see anyway. just clean of most of the grease etc and check for severe wear.

Unless seriously pitted I wouldn't even bother with the plates as within a short time they will probably get damage to the chrome anyway.
