Great pictures here. The magic word is GoPro. These wonderful match box sized cameras can be positioned in every thinkable angle with great results.

Back to Dan's original question: there's a member's profile pic here on the forum with a white s/screen car with white tonneau - the pic is taken from above and that gives you another great & unexpected view of the Triumph. I cannot find the pic rightaway, but I'm sure others will chip in with a link to the pic.

Quite right, Menno. Try adding an RC quadcopter into the mix, and it gets even better!

(Not my work incidentally ... but very tempted to get one!! Nice bit of kit that).

Wow that's a great video! Around 1:30 there's that shot from above, showing the sleek angles of the TR.

I'm going to pick up the TR next week (I have to get rid of that sailing boat that's in the garage right now...) and one of the first things I'll do, is slapping the GoPro to the side of the car.

I have toyed with idea of a GoPro but which model to buy. How long do the batteries last in one filming? and is it possible to take power to it from the cigarette lighter socket for endless filming?

Hi Dave,

As the housing is waterproof there is no connection to power. You can get open backs but I'm not sure that they allow for a power connection. You might be able to butcher one of the open backs and fit a USB power supply with a 90 degree bend as the back is needed to locate the camara in the housing.

I have a Gopro hero 2 and the Lidl Silvercrest Actioncam lookalike. Both fit in Go Pro mounts. The Silvercrest is considered to be a more acceptable loss should it fall off and get trashed. Also about £200 cheaper than the Go pro.

The Gopro has a separate LCD screen and the Silvercrest does not.

The silvercrest has a remote control and the Gopro does not.

As for endless filming there is a limit to file size and boy are they big depending on your chosen resolution.

here's a link to the Lidl one

Do a search on the forum as there was a large discussion last year on the merits of Gopro

As Rod's video obove demonstrates, a good modest investment for the GoPro is a small external microphone. Ideally, this can be placed in the cockpit or under the dash to eliminate the wind noise and pick up the sound of the engine. Not sure if there is a socket on the Silvercrest model.

It appears that you can get a side open housing for the power supply.

Silvercrest model has same connections as the Gopro and at £80 a good buy.

Silvercrest is unknown overhere in Holland (sadly).

We (Maurice my son and I) own a Hero3 Silver Edition. Bought on a Dutch Gumtree-ish site. We paid less than 200 GBP for a new-in-the-box specimen. The owner had bought one for himself and he got one as a b'day gift from his family, so he sold one. The quality you get from filming with a GoPro is amazing!

You need some mounts to attach the GoPro on your car. Best to buy these online from China(...) And US based stores tend to be cheaper as well. I bought an roll bar mount in Florida for 40% less than the retail price overhere. We needed the roll bar mount for an angle shot on Maurice' dinghy.

I'm not too worried about loosing the GoPro. You can invent your own tethers to double secure the camera. My son capsized his dinghy + GoPro noumerous times in heavy winds and high waves without any problem.

Fully loaded, you get about 4hrs of filming. More important is the SD card you need. The GoPro is able to record 20mins at the time. After that, the film is over-written with a new one. Larger SD-cards give more filming time. In real life, 20mins of filming is enough to make a nice vid for friends/upload it on YT.

When you're on an Apple computer, iMovie will give you enough possibilities to edit the film. I'm not very well skilled with that, so I normally only store it on an external HD.

Together with the GoPro, you can download a free app on your phone that will able you to use your phone as the remote for the GoPro. Personally, I never use it.

To give you an idea what you can do with a GoPro, here's a recent Australian vid on YT about Optimist Dinghy sailing. Pay attention to: the wide angles, the focus, the razor sharp images, the slo-mo and the fact that the GoPro is absolutely waterproof.

I use my gopro hero3 silver on Amita and on the TR, might one day stik it onto one of the Ducatis also.

Presently I only have one mount for the TR, glued under the rollover bar.

Must experiment with an outside mount, maybe on the 'drive it day'

I would also love a quadcopter, mainly to film Amita sailing....... But I fear it would end up in the drink!

I have the extra battery pack, which comes with waterproof and open 'backs' the open one has an exposed usb which allows charging/powering.

With the additional batter the gopro does last most of the day.

I do use the iPhone app to control the camera sometimes, but wifi on the gopro hammers the battery life.

At least a few Forumites will recall the 1977 TR Silver Jubilee Run, John O'Groats to Lands End . . . . .

Yes I know, it's like the Swinging 60s, if you claim to remember much you weren't really there . . . . .

One unforgettable memory - hacking down the M5 at a fair clip in the open TR6, a light degree of wet stuff coming down, sufficient to encourage a speed that kept the rain off our heads. In the mirror loomed LMW140, Chris Sergison's legendary red TR2, coming up behind at a speed that only a seriously tweaked TR2 could achieve, beyond the reach of a standard car.

Leaning backwards out of the passenger seat, SLR in hand, right elbow skimming the tarmac, the ever intrepid Julian Stephens proving once again that there's no snapshotter like a Cornish snapshotter.

A fine TR man, and an innovator in the days before digital and GoPro.

Cheers

Alec

Hi Miles,

Agree but you have to stick the mike up a Rabbits bottom so I'm told. Watch outside broadcasts and they all have them. I like the possibilities that you have to edit digital pictures. Taking stills from video seems to be relatively easy.

I rook an 7 minute video file size 1.01gb when driving the hill section on the Moffat rally but yet to find out how to post it.
