Not a rolling restoration more of a rolling clean up!

Recommended Posts

I have decided to start a clean up of my 59 3A and am (fairly) determined that this will not become a major restoration project but time will tell. Overall the car is in good solid condition but has a few problems:

Untidy under the bonnet, including wiring, which gives me cause for concern. The car is fitted with a steering rack which means it also has an electric fan. Also fitted with a remote servo. So my plan of action is to revert to the steering box and conventional fan. I have owned TRs with a steering box so know the diffence it will make in weight of steering. Also will be removing the servo.

So the plan is to remove front, engine/gearbox etc and remove all paint under the bonnet, then spray in etch primer and body colour.

One question is re the position of the control box, is it correct or should it be turned through 90 degrees per photo in BPs book?

Have attached 3 photos showing the condition now, prior to dismantling hopefully for some interest, will add further photos as I progress unless asked not to!

Need some parts: For the steering I have a steering box lower plus idler both in ok condition - need the rest, ie the tie rod assemblies complete, also need the stator(?) tube from the horn control head which has been cut off on my car.

Also need fan and pully, and dynamo pully. Will also post this in wanted ad.

Cheers, Bill

Bill, My car has a steering rack fitted and also still has the original fan, the engine is raised very slightly on the mounts with shims, personally I like the improvements that come with the rack, no doubt you will get lot's of fors and against on here as has been discussed many times before, it boils down to personal preference. Cheers Bill.

Bill: I think your control box looks correctly positioned.

As has been mentioned above, unless you are an originality fan (no pun intended), I'd retain the electric one; to my mind, a reversion to mechanical is a potential waste of cooling efficiency and (albeit a small amount) power.

But you are right to get shot of the servo - definitely not needed, and things will look a lot less cluttered once it's gone. And of course I see that the wiring needs some sorting.

Lastly, looking at your pics, and being 'an oily rag' devotee myself, might I make the observation that your car's under-bonnet condition looks goodish as it is, already; if you go ahead with sprucing up, you will lose some characterful patina!

Just my view, of course; good luck whatever route you take.

Cheers,

Tim.

Bill,

FWIW, I've just looked at Bill P's "Original TR" book, and it seems to suggest that if the control box has push-on connectors it would have been fitted vertically like Rodbr's, which might explain why your wires are all bunched together under it at the moment. The book also suggests the flasher unit should be fitted vertically, but the picture in the book shows it horizontal!

Hope that doesn't just add to the confusion!

John

(ps - sent you a PM as well)

Finally turned a corner, paint is on, about 10 days ago and getting ready to flat and polish. Suspension fitted loosley awaiting engine etc so as to settle. It is great to work on the car without getting really oily! Now awaiting new discs and pads (didn't know I needed then until I came refit - they worked ok but deeply scored so couldn't put them back on. These ha'penney worths of tar seem to be building up).

Couple of latest pics attached, still on plan to complete by sometime in May, fingers crossed.

Cheers, Bill

Add my name to list of those that enjoy looking at all pics of Tr2s, 3s, and 3as. Regardless of condition. How do I post a PM? Think I have steering parts left over from my conversion to rack and pinion avail. Mine is a 61 Tr3a. Original fan and odd parts cleaned up and artistically arranged hanging on the garage wall look pretty cool though.
