Softop Velcro Strips

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Spoke to Mark at Dons Hoods, yesterday, due to staff illness, the flu, my hood has been delayed.

However its due to be started on monday.

The frame freshly painted, complete with new front header rail rivets is on the car, and i have

turned my attention to the window detail, namely the velcro strips and those window rubbers.

For starters i do not intend to fit the ally retainer channels or rubbers  as i have never seen a use

for those except to look ugly, so will most likely go in the bin . Mine never 100% touched the glass

if water gets to the inside of the glass its too late anyway, my car was more watertight without.

I have previously had Rimmers velcro strips fitted..

and they seemed to work ok, i think there must be a better way, are there any alternatives??

Cheers

Mine don't 100% touch the glass either, but the fact that they touch at all prevents the glass from chattering/vibrating., and I think they keep draught out.

As you say, the velcro on the sides works well, what makes you unhappy about it?

Hi Ivor

The Whole frame on mine is now a different one, i have got hold of an another one which was complete with all rivets in place good side channels , all i have done is refit my front header rail and repaint. I am hoping

for a good fit when new hood arrives.

Velcro works well, but what is the use of these rubber strips?, How are they supposed to look when fitted correctly

in an ideal world? They were designed for something.

Cheers

Guy, on my car the rubber strips in the alu rails run exactly flush with the top of the glass and they are a perfect draft/rain protector :) .

If I remember well the rubbers are shaped in an half open U, open side pointing outwards and so sealing off the window top side.

I think the alu rails seriously assist to keep the velcro in place when you remove/tare open the soft top sides :( when folding backwards

Hi Jean,

I often thought that the rubber strips looked as if they should excatly fit flush, but cant see it working.

Maybe it might on my new frame <_< .

Anyone brave enough to post a photo of this detail! A picture paints a thousand words.

I do agree with the fact that the aly rail will keep the velcro in place, but am sure i cam find a way around that,

if need be

But i would like to get it as it was designed to be , if i possibly can

Thanks

Guy

My Moss mohair hood came with the 4 velcro strips. My old vinyl hood was missing these. When I fitted the hood onto the front rail the spray adhesive lifted my new black hammerite off so I thought I would try double sided adhesive carpet tape to fit the velcro strips. The problem is the velcro when new is so strong and interlocking it pulled the strips off the frame. Also you have to remember to split the strips before folding the hood back and also lining the hook side up with the inside of the hood is a bit of unecessary grief. Went back to not bothering with them!

Guy, I just digged out the frame in order to take some pictures. It's still folded in a box but I think you can make out how the rubber and the velcro is fitted

Jean,

That is very nice of you, Thank You.

Ok i am convinced, i have dug out my trims from the back of the loft where i had flung them, they look

like yours. I think the drivers window on the new frame will work perfectly, but the passenger window

needs adjusment slightly. I imagine i will be able to adjust it correctly by taking of the door panel

and poking around inside.

For the moment , i cant do alot till the Velcro trims get here, and then the hood.

Thanks again

I may post a few photos if this all works out as i hope it will, if it doesnt

well i wont :P

Cheers

Guy
