Replacement rear window screen for an original TR3A metal hardtop

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking for a replacement rear window screen for my 1960 TR3A's original metal hardtop. Does anyone know of a good supplier? I live on the west coast of the US, and I already checked out Moss/USA. Moss wants 453.95 USD (362 EUR) for the hardtop backlight, and that price doesn't include shipping. So I was wondering if the group had any recommendations on other options for purchasing a replacement perspex (plexiglass) screen from Europe or the UK. Thanks for your help.

-Pete

Update Note: I've been told Moss/UK has this item for 124 GBP. Does anyone else know if there is a better price out there somewhere?

Yikes! That seems rather pricey for a hunk of plexiglass.

Several years ago, a Triumph acquaintance in Oklahoma paid to borrow an original rear window from me (I'm in upstate NY!) and duplicated same. I don't know if he ever did more than one or two, but I can check with him. The one he sent back along with my original was just fine; the edges were a bit rough, but a quick "dry" test seemed to indicate that it would have fit my hardtop perfectly, and those rough edges would not show inside the window gasket!

Andy,

Let me know if you hear anything. I asked a local plastic outfit in Portland how much it would cost to re-fabicate a new window using my broken one as a mold, and they quoted me $395...ouch again. I guess you have to be careful with "copied" rear windows, because if they don't fit exactly, they can blow out of the hardtop during a drive.

Original ones wernt much better for staying in!! Its fun to replace them as its always a fight to keep both ends in whilst dealing with the middle! With the exchange rate being what it is at the moment it would be cheaper to have one shipped from over here ;)

Stuart.

Hi, You could try www.limora.com. A German company but the website is available in English and priced in Euro's. Go to search and type in Pt no 15485.

Absolutely. The window in my hardtop was pushed out (by a certain

well known TR personality), many many years ago, 3-up on the way

to a committee meeting. I never did get it to fit again.

Looking back, I think it was a judgment from above that TR3s were

not meant to have a hardtop fitted!

The rear window is not too hard to fit but will blow out if you go fast. I lost two and finally someone in the club had a template made up and was selling them in TRAction. I bought two and had my retired engineering friend make up some stainless steel clamps which tighten through the sealing rubber with an alan key. I never lost another window and later I heard that Moss UK had purchased the mould and were going to sell new windows. If their stock still comes from this source the windows fit very well in about 20 minutes. The clamps are a must.

Good luck, Richard

Richard,

Do you have a picture that shows what the clamps look like and where they are positioned on the hardtop? Thanks. -Pete
