When Duane Eddy’s “Because they’re young” rings out across the Severn Hall on Saturday evening at this year’s International Weekend it will mark the return of one of the most requested entertainments that have graced the stage of the International weekends.
For two decades members stayed on their feet until well after midnight dancing to Andy Canning’s music machine that delivered the sound, the lights and the action. Now after a decade of absence from the music scene, he’s back...
In a recent interview Andy said “Music has always been a passion of mine and over the years I have learnt what the members like from the requests that came up on stage. In the early days I had a very special mentor, TR Action Editor the late Ginny Soden, who would come up at the end of the evening to shake hands give me a kiss and say “You’re getting better”.
So this year will be a re-run of those two decades of fun and partying. Still there are: Simple Minds, Frankie “Two Tribes”, Michael Jackson, AC DC, ZZ Top, Cat’s audience participating “Oops upside your head“ and of course Ginny’s favourite, Dexy’s Midnight Runners.
Andy’s daughters Michelle and Lorraine will be helping him and giving him tips on some of the sounds that may go down well with the members who have never been and of course we now have the “Yoof Group” led by our very own Wayne Scott.
Andy says “Sound system and lighting technology has moved on and I hope you like the revamp. I have sourced a company that knows the venue and they are providing a first class package for your entertainment”
For many years Andy built props and themes the last one being the Dinky Toy Box in the year 2000 aided as always by local members, but this time around there will be nothing so grand - “But I may have got a couple of things up my sleeve” he says... “The main theme is to remember we are 40, so let’s party”.
