Spa Classic 2012
Classic racing at Spa Francorchamps, May 25th to 27th
This is a new event which had its initial meeting in 2011, and was enjoyed by a number of TRs for its low key, informal nature and good access to both the action and the infield paddocks. It is possible to get up close to the competition cars in the paddocks, moving freely between different areas for viewing.
Spa is one of the classic circuits, and for many drivers their favourite, combining a wooded hilly setting in the Ardennes with demanding racing skill. The 7km circuit probably demonstrates the importance of driver skill more than any other in the world. This is largely due to the Eau Rouge and Blanchimont corners, both which need to be taken flat out to achieve a fast run onto the straights after them, which aids a driver in both a fast lap and in overtaking.
Running a similar format to the Goodwood Revival and Classic Le Mans, grids over the weekend will be made up of Classic Endurance Racing, Trofeo Nastro Rosso and Sixties’ Endurance, plus this year Group C, Historic Formula 2 and the Historic Formula 1 Championship.
After the success of the first meeting in 2011, Spa Classic is being rerun this year on 25, 26 & 27 May, and the TR Register has arranged with the organisers for club access to the circuit, including a designated TRR on circuit parking area, with the option of taking your TR on a track session.
As part of the Register’s visit to this event, we are producing a TRR rally plate and polo shirt with Classic Spa logo, prices and details to follow.
By booking through the Register, club entry will give special discounted rates for:
- Weekend access inclusive of all the grandstands and paddock.
- Club Area pass for TRs in the heart of the circuit
- Optional track lap sessions – a chance to take your TR through Eau Rouge!
When details are firmed up, which should be very soon, you will be able to book via the TR Register’s On Line shop (open to members and non members)
In the area there is a range of accommodation, most of which can be found through www.spa-francorchamps.be/en/tourism-accommodations.php
And a final note, given everyone’s travel arrangements and requirements will be different the TR Register is not offering a travel agency service. Therefore, it will up to you to book your ferry and dates of travel, so please plan early particularly as Spa Classic 2012 falls over the Whitsun weekend, and the Monday 28th May is a public holiday in France and Belgium (but not UK this year).

Press Release: The £4 billion Hobby
A recent study into the social, cultural and economic value of the historic vehicle movement undertaken by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) shows that activity resulting from interest in historic vehicles is worth at least £4.3 billion annually to the UK economy, supports employment for 28,000 people and yet is responsible for less than 0.25% of traffic.
These headline results were announced on 6 December to members of the All Party Parliamentary Historic Vehicle Group (APPHVG), the press and business leaders at a reception in the House of Lords hosted by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, President of both FBHVC and APPHVG.
The research underpinning the report was carried out earlier in 2011 in conjunction with the Historic Vehicle Research Institute (HVRI) and is the third time that a team led by Geoff Smith, a Vice President of FBHVC and co-Founder of HVRI, has ‘measured’ the historic vehicle movement. The last survey, in 2006, had found that the historic vehicle movement was worth £3.2 billion and supported employment for 27,000 people.
Commenting on the latest finding, Geoff said:
“It is encouraging that the economic value of the movement has at least been maintained in real terms despite recent difficult trading conditions, and it is excellent news that 1,000 more people are earning from the movement. Traders are generally optimistic for the future, with many predicting growth leading to new jobs. On the down side, many are concerned that the burden of regulations faced by small businesses may stifle this potential growth before it can start.”
The survey showed that the historic vehicle movement in general continues to enjoy a strong following amongst the general public who spend considerable sums on books, magazines, attending events and purchasing historic-vehicle related memorabilia.
After learning of that survey showed that two-thirds of traders were concerned about potential restrictions on the use of historic vehicles, Mike Penning, Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport with responsibility for Road Safety, commented:
“I’m pleased to be able to re-assure everyone that there is no intention whatsoever to restrict the use of historic vehicles. I see them as important to our national heritage and would like to see more of them in use.”
Key findings and a PDF of the report can be found at www.fbhvc.co.uk/survey-2011

[VIDEO] Donington Historic Event at Donington Park
This was an invited club event and we were located in the joint TR Register and TSSC club area infield of the track where we could display our cars and set up camp. Later we found we also had pole position in readiness for fun on the track.
Thanks to Colin Wright AO of the Derwent Valley TSSC who helped us obtain track passes when we arrived a good example of inter group co-operation. Colin can be seen in the video he is in the white Dolomite on the track in front of me - slowing me down:))

Coventry Transport Museum - May 1st 2011
The Birmingham Group has been given the opportunity to exhibit 40 cars outside the museum - Millennium Square, Coventry on Sunday May 1st.
The Museum is currently displaying a selection of Le Mans cars through the years and is well worth a visit. You will also be free to wander through the ages of vehicle manufacturing in Coventry and visit the Thrust exhibition.
It is an ideal showcase to show off our cars and what the TR Register represents. We will have TS2, the Coca Cola TR7 present along with some previous Le Mans racers on display. We will also have a second coca cola car on display which we believe is the first time two of these cars have ever been together.
It will make a great day out

New play – “Too Much Pressure”
Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre is staging a brand new play called “Too Much Pressure” that is set in Coventry in 1979 - a time of political and social upheaval that marked the end of the line for the Standard Triumph factory. An original Coventry-built, 1959, powder blue Triumph Herald will take pride of place centre stage as part of the set design (see attached picture) as characters in the play will be working on it throughout.
Following the success of Coventry Blitz play, One Night in November, writer Alan Pollock and director Hamish Glen have teamed up once again to create a brand new drama called Too Much Pressure, which will be playing in the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry’s B2 auditorium from Sat 29 Jan to Sat 19 Feb.
Alongside We Love You City and One Night in November, Too Much Pressure is the final instalment in the Belgrade’s Coventry trilogy of plays which have marked pivotal moments in the city’s history, and it takes us back to 1979 - a time of political and social upheaval that marked the end of the line for many of the city’s car factories.
The story follows the Austin family who live on the Canley Park estate in Coventry. Cliff and his eldest son Terry are both track workers at the Standard Triumph and are becoming increasingly concerned about their future at the car factory. Cliff’s youngest son Gary is more concerned with Coventry’s burgeoning music scene and forming a band with school mates Nick and Sonya.
But as industrial relations reach boiling point and Gary’s band takes its first few tentative steps, an act of shocking violence propels Nick, Sonya and Gary’s family towards a decision that will change all their lives forever.
For up to date information and behind-the-scenes action, including interviews, photographs and videos check out the Belgrade’s Too Much Pressure blog at http://tmpbelgrade.tumblr.com/.
Tickets for Too Much Pressure are available now from the box office on 024 7655 3055 or via www.belgrade.co.uk priced from £6.50 to £12.50, with concessions available.
